Because there are times that you need to go that fast. My son nearly died due to a drug overdose many years ago. All available ambulances and Life Flight helos were tied up with a major highway accident so it was up to me to get him to the hospital. I made the 35 mile run at about 125 MPH most of the way. The ER physician said that if we had been 5 minutes later he would not have made it. I did pick up a cop along the way and ignored him until we got to the hospital. He did write a reckless driving complaint. And the judge tossed it.

Bottom line: It's up to ME to decide what's appropriate at the moment and take my chances with the legal system if my reason isn't adequate. I don't need some moron in the government forcing me to drive a certain speed that HE thinks is "safe enough".

It is an idiotic waste of money, just the same as two story pick-up trucks that can drive over anything except the two story pick-up truck right in front of it.

That's why a guy driving a '94 Geo who hasn't had a moving violation in 34 years has to pay $800 a year for insurance. It isn't in case the Geo gets wrecked by the car traveling at 185 MPH, it is so they can afford to total the street legal racing car.

I agree! However, as the automobile is a 'world wide' industry, there are places where you can legally drive over 70mph - Germany for instance. Also on your own personal property you can drive as fast as you want - so if you happen to have several hundred acres and a race track in your back yard....

I think it is an ego thing for many men though...

Bostonian hit it right. There are times when you might need to drive faster. Also don't forget that, if you want, you can take your car to a race course or a drag strip and drive it there as fast as you want.

You're expected to be adult enough to know how to control yourself, just like when you are drinking alcohol.

Some people DON'T control themselves though, EH?
