No nasty comments or unwarranted moral judgement from me - I promise. I am a midwife, I have seen every side of the coin and for the welfare of ALL patients (born or unborn) I always keep an open mind.

The morning after pill (MAP) is intended for occasional use when either contraception has not been used or when normal contraception fails (like a condom breaks or you realise you've forgotten to take your normal contraceptive pills).

The claim that the MAP causes an abortion or kills a baby is scientifically incorrect. This narrow view assumes that conception has occurred, and there is absolutely no way of knowing whether this has happened. In addition, you have to also consider the fact that not every fertilised agg naturally implants anyway. It's a subjective view.

The MAP works by NOT by causing an abortion, but in general rather by:

1. Suppressing ovulation if it has not already taken place; and
2. Altering the lining of the uterus so that IF (and that's a big IF) conception has occurred the embryo will be unable to attach.

The hormones contained in a MAP are the same as those found in normal contraceptive pills, just in a higher dose. These hormones are NOT the same as those produced in pregnancy that trigger a positive pregnancy test result, so the MAP will not cause a pregnancy test to return positive.

Should the MAP fail to work effectively (and the odds of this happening are small) and in the unlilkely event that conception occurs and the embryo successfully implants and a pregnancy does result, or if the MAP is taken by a woman who is already pregnant but does not yet know, then based on the evidence that we have to hand there is no increased risk of birth defects, nor is there any effect on your chances of become pregnant in the future should you so want to.

There are possible side effects of the MAP which are experienced due to the sudden hormone surge - common side effects are nausea, breast tenderness, dizziness, headaches, temporary short term changes to the menstrual cycle and a general feeling of fatigue and malaise. However these will wear off once the hormones have worked their way out of your system. Bear in mind also that a lot of women taking the MAP are already anxious at the time they take it so this can contribute to feeling unwell.

One known side effect is that should conception and implantation occur then there is a slightly increased risk of ectopic pregnancy - spontaneous ectopic pregnancy accounts for just under 2% of pregnancies, following the MAP this risk is increased to about 4%.

Best of luck.

Are you saying you took the morning after pill, yet, you are still indeed pregnant? I would suggest getting in to a DR ASAP! It may just be left over hormone if a test was positive. To answer better more details are needed. I would definitely contact your physician.

the morning after pill messes up your body, so can probably cause problems for an egg that is already forming. i would talk to your dr about this.

the morning after pill isn't meant for just fixing all your mistakes and making things all better.
