Couldn't agree more. I am one of those that regularly mark down answers that are, irrelevant, answered in the vernacular, blatant advertising and/or are likely to cause offence to sober minded people. I'm with you on this one.

Yahoo do not process the reports properly and that is the reason why people abuse the flagging option. I believe that they have a computer programme which prioritises certain words and concepts and fishes those reported Qs and As out. They probably have a set quota, say 80% of okaying deletions. This would explain why genuinely legitimate questions and answers are deleted after they have gone to Yahoo.
It would also explain why some deletions go through almost instantaneously, without time to be reviewed.
This is an hypothesis, of course, but it would explain why the deletion factor is such a lottery.
I do agree, though, that abuse would definitely increase if there wasn't some form of potential consequence.

I think it would be worse, with the reporting option it makes it fun for the disenfranchised and the zealots alike providing an equal opportunity for everyone of that ilk. It also lets decent folk toss out the perverse when they become intolerable. I think the balance is there and given the number of times I've had questions and answers deleted compared to the number of People who claim I've offended them via emails and the thumbs down I'd have to say it works well, after all I am at level six on the same account, so there must be some balance in place. good question, thanks for asking it.

In the United States freedom of expression is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, although our Founding Fathers did make an exception for Yahoo by allowing them to TOS us for anything and everything. If this site is so offensive to people, they need to do something else.

It's full of people swearing and being offensive anyway. I think it would be better without the whole report abuse. People on here just don't know how to have a laugh...

I think the report system would be fine if people didn't abuse it BUT as we all know they do! I think people who report maliciously should be suspended or banned if they do it to excess. In reality Yahoo are just getting US to moderate the site so they don't have to!

Much better as most violations are as someo9ne wants the debate stifled,,,
Keep violations for stuff like person details, people trying to get kids phone numbers or posting them, people justpoint gaming or insulting ... ie only answering rubbish or **** or yup.
Problem is there are many very important questions and reasonable stuff removed as anti relgious or sexaul of nature but people need to learn and discuss these things.

Much worse - there just needs to be a better system to remove the abuse. If it was not automated it would be much better and everyone would be happy but that would cost money.

Well I think there are some people out there who are too sensitive and have no sense of humour and report things that are not offensive but funny. But it might get a little out of control.
