Abbey do a basic account where you only get a cashpoint card and can set up standing orders and get salary paid in. but they will not give credit card, overdraft, cheque guarantee card or cheque book. it is open to everyone with proof of identity and address.

Most high dtreet banks have a basic account just for this purpose. Though they don't advertise it, they actually have to.

All banks do a basic account where you cant do direct debits and no overdrafts.
Lloyds do a basic one and its quite easy to get.

Try and get him an electron or solo account, you can't go over what you actually have in your account and they restrict how you can use your card so that you can't get into debt.

Try the post office - they are more accommodating because people have pensions, benefits etc paid into them.

yorkshire bank have a basic account but i suppose they would all do basic! i say yorkshire cause my brother was in a similar situ, and he had no problems, good luck.
