I have seen that some women seem to be getting scans at 6 weeks. I thought that your first scan was when you are 12 weeks. I am now 9 weeks pregnant. Should I wait for my midwife to contact me or should I contact them?

when you go to the doctors he will then inform your midwife, generally they visit you at home to do your notes family history, weight etc, then you will get a scan through if unsure of your dates if you are not you should get one between 12-16wks.ive always asked for a scan earlier just so i no everything is ok,go to your doctor and ask to be sent for an early assessment scan this will confirm babys alive and well if this is what you want.you will have a scan around 19-22wks for abnormalities and to find out the sex if you want and if they can see..lol..good luck and congrats hope this has helped.x

Hi. I remember asking this same question here a few months ago. It seems some authorities are performing early scans. Where I am in Fife they only scan early when there has been IVF or a history of miscarriage etc.
Although I had previously miscarried at 8 weeks I was 14 weeks before I saw a midwife and was booked in, 15 weeks before I had a scan. Between informing my doctor of a positive home test and this time, nothing was done to confirm a pregnancy medically. Being a 40 year old I would have preferred an early scan. Also beware that some tests e.g. nuchal fold test are not done as matter of routine. Be proactive.
Congratulations and well done you. xx

There is no need to have a scan at 6 weeks unless you are having problems and are instructed to by a doctor.
When you have your first scan depends on the area you live in. Some areas do a nuchal scan, which is at about 13 weeks. Other areas do a dating scan which is at about 15 weeks. All areas do a scan at around 20 weeks.

If you haven't been in touch with your local midwifes then you need to do this. Many people assume they will contact them because they spoke to a doctor, but don't assume anything! If you don't have your first appointment booked by now, you should definitely call and make an appointment because your booking in appointment should be at around 10 weeks if this is your first baby.

Early scans are normally only offered to women who are experiencing concerning symptoms ie: excessive pain, bleeding etc or if they have had previous problems like miscarriage. Somethimes they have one early as a 'dating' scan. If they are not sure how far along they are, a scan may be offered as a way of determining due date.
For the 'normal' pregnant woman they will wait until 12-14 weeks as this will give the best results in determining the health and well being of the baby.
Some hospitals expect you to book your own scans and others will only liase with your midwife so if in doubt give her a call and make an appointment. You should have a booking appointment with her prior to the scan anyway when she will take all your details etc.

Good luck with the baby!

It all depends on your doctor/midwife. With my previous pregnancies I got my first ultrasounds done at 18 weeks and 20 weeks. With my second pregnancy I was given another one at 36 weeks or so because there was concern with her size and amount of fluid.

With this pregnancy I got a "surprise" ultrasound when we thought I was about 11 weeks, with what the scan showed us I was really almost 13 weeks. Today I go in for the big scan and hopefully find out if we're having a boy or a girl - I'm 21 1/2 weeks pregnant. I could have gone in last week for it, but I wanted to wait until this week knowing that my other children are not in school for spring break. This is something I want them to see, and we're all excited!

It varies all over the country, but generally you get your dating scan between 8 and 12 weeks, My friend had her scan at 7 weeks as she had some light bleeding and they wanted to check everything was ok, but I had mine last week at 12 weeks. I received a letter from the hospital with the appointment 2 weeks before. If you ask your midwife she'll be able to tell you around which week to expect your appointment for the scan, but don't worry, they won't forget you!

Some ladies have early scans at 5/6 weeks if they have had problems with pregnancy previously. Most trust now offer a 12 week scan as standard although some you only have a 20 week scan.

Unless you are worried I would wait until you hear from your midwife.

Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy.

officially (in the uk) 12 weeks 1st scan, 20 weeks 2nd scan.
some people have earlier/ more often if they think there is a problem or they are unsure how far along in the pregnancy they are.
TIP: check with your midwife they have booked your 12 week scan (call and ask for a date). I some how got 'forgotten' and had mine in week 13.
Good Luck

Your first scan is due around the 12th week. I had a scan at 6 weeks and will have another at 8 weeks due to having suffered from recurring miscarraiges. You have nothing to worry about but check with your midwife and see what she says. Good luck and happy parenting.
