Hey blue,

First congrats on the babies! It really sounds like you have a case of fin rot in the tank. This is readily treatable and you will need to treat the entire tank to be sure you got rid of it.

Take the carbon out of your filter and do a 50% water change on the tank. Then treat the tank for 10 days with either Furanace or Maracyn. Don't stop the treatment early even if they do look much better or it can come back and be very difficult to treat. Assuming it's fin rot this will clear it right up.

I apologize in absentia for the idiot 123.

I suggest getting the baby's out of the breading chamber and into a small tank of there own, and treating them for fin rot. (Melafix usually works pretty well.) I'm guessing that you have other fish in your tank so you will want to treat them all to be on the safe side.

Is it just there fins??? if you have a digital camera take a picture with you to the pet store and ask the fish guy to make sure you have the right diagnosis and treatment for your fish. Yahoo answers is great but a little limited with no pics.

Good Luck
Eric.

Yes, no. Could be.

I'd separate some of the babies and give them treatment for fin rot.

I doubt it is a genetic fault because the mother would have died from it when it was a baby.

A sudden loss of tail is probably a bacterial or fungus infection.

Yes, it's probably Ick or some other fungus. Take one of the critters to the pet store to get something to get rid of it.
