I t may be easier for your formed your question as follows . What percent , a number divide by 100 multiplied by is over of.
For example in your word problem you already have three of the factors 30% witch is 30 over100 and you are asking what is 30% of 49.50 ( is over of)

? %/100 x is/of = 30/100 x ?/ 49.50

= 30 x 49.50 = 1485 /100= 14.85

49.50 - 14.85 = $34.65

Hope this helps!

The solution to this question would be:
Actual price = 49.50 / 70% or = 49.50 * 100/70
= $70.71 = $70.71

To do this question, just minus 30% from 100% and divide 49.50 with that value. This generally applies to all similar questions. Its actually quite simple

Remember that percent means per hundred (as 30 years per century would be 30% and 30 cents per dollar would be 30% of a dollar). Your are going to divide $49.50 into 100 parts then take 30 parts. $49.50/100x30 = $14.85 (off).

Actual price is $49.50 - $14.85 = $34.65

The more direct calculation would be that if you are taking 30 parts of a hundred (30%) off you will have 70 parts of a hundred (70%) left. $49.50/100x70 = $34.65.

Even more directly, 70% of $49.50 = 0.70 x $49.50 = $34.65 because 70/100 = 0.70

When you're finding the price of something when it has a percentage off it...
Find that percentage first- 30%x 49.5 = 14.85
Then take that from the total amount that you had to begin with.
49.50- 14.85 =34.65

what is wrong with you guys, read the question carefully. it said the $49.50 was 30% off. the $49.50 is the price after 30% disscount. and he want the actual price, that is before the 30% disscount.

so, here the steps of calculation,
actual price - (30% of the actual price) = 49.50
actual price - ((30/100) * actual price) = 49.50
actual price(1 - (30/100)) = 49.50
actual price = 70.71.

$70.71 is the price before the 30% disscount.

make a proportion. 30% off means you have paid 70% of the actual price

70% $49.50
100% x

x= (100/70) $49.50
so the actual price before discount has been $70.71

Divide it by 10.....which gives you 10%.....multiply by 3....which gives you 30%....then take that off he original price. = $34.65.

CLOUDY...the question is ambiguous...it could be interpreted either way, reading it 'carefully.'...as you put it. So there.
