My understanding is that this is not possible. Make a backup before you format - but be sure that you do not carry any viruses or other nasties over. That way you can sometimes save important data - but basically you have a problem.

The suggestion put forward by SJ is the only way you will be able to do it. If you format the flash drive whilst the data is still on it, you will lose it all.
Having said that, there are specialist companies that will attempt to recover the data after a format, but they are prohibitively expensive ... unless you've got loadsa money.

I am not sure it is possible directly, unless there is a way to partition the drive.
Only other way - obviously - is to back up the data somewhere else, format the drive and then reload the data.

just copy the data on any location in ur pc...
before coping u can check virus
then format the flash drive...
after formating
copy the data again on flash from pc where u stored...
