From what I had seen being a mechanic at a Dodge/Mazda Dealership. As with all cars, as long as you perform routine maintenance on time and with someone that you can trust is actually doing the work that is recommended. The only thing that should fail is faulty parts, and for the first five years the dealership will replace faulty parts for free. I had seen some of the first Miata's that were released in the states still coming into our shop for regular maintenance. Since most people will turn around and sell the car within the first five years that's a pretty good deal, but the problem cars are mostly minivans and performance cars, they're the one's that have the majority of the issues.

I have a 2006, and before that owned a 2001. I've had no trouble with them, and they are alot of fun to drive. In fact, it's about the most fun car you can own for the money. I also get about 28MPG average.

The Miata owners seem happy with them and I haven't heard of any persistent problems.
