I have done TEFL but not sure where to start in a private adult lesson?

I've tutored for many years and I found that the best way to start is to find out the student's B.I.G. (background, interests & goals) This can and should be done at the very beginning and if the student's level is too low, you can either ask someone to translate briefly, if not then use picture cues and have the student look up the BIG words in a dictionary and draw pics. It's very important to know how much they know already - sometimes students are shy and know more than they let on but either way you need this infor to know where to start. Interests are important because if you use material related to this, the student will participate much better, and finally goals because you need to know what they hope to accomplish.....Here's a rule of thumb, imagine a an outwardly moving spiral with the student at the center.
