Backstage? Could be, and could just be 'off stage'... The characters are talking about something that's happening outside the stage parameters, and they can see it, but the audience can't - and i don't now how to refer to it in exposition.

Backstage is usually more a technical term, referring to positions for actors but rarely employed as a metaphorical tool in writing.

The Wings are the areas immediately to the sides of the stage, usually used in a metaphorical fashion for the actors to refer to, to allow the audience to easily imagine action on either side.

The Fourth Wall refers to the space that the audience occupies, as in that directly in front of the stage.

Offstage can be any of the above.

Basically, if you want the actors to be postmodern, let them talk about the wings or the fourth wall. If you're thinking of technical directions, talk about backstage or the wings. If the actors refer to it onstage, and the audience can't see it, the director or writer can call it the wings but the actors can't.

For God's sake just keep the damn actors in the middle and save us all the trouble.

If something is happening but you cant see it you could refer to 'off-stage action'. Off-stage tends to refer to life and non-visible space within the play/onstage action whereas 'backstage' tends to refer to the physical area behind the stage etc and real time - ie technicians, actors waiting, stage machinery etc.
