If you drop a perfectly elastic ball on a solid (metal) floor it will return exactly to your hand (no lost energy). If it is not very elastic like putty it may stay (stick) on the floor. If you drop a steel ball bearing ball on a metal floor it will bounce because it is elastic. If you deflect a leaf or helical spring it will return to its original position when released because it is elastic. Rubber elastic band can be stretched and will return to their original shape even though they are actually less elastic than steel or glass.
