I just reciently replaced the transmission type number 31th in my 1998 dodge caravan at 125,000 miles. The vehicle is driven on expressway only and has never pulled a trailer as there is no hitch on the vehicle. The question is, should I install a cooler in the return line to the transmission, and would it help. This vehicle is driven only on the expressway, and maybe shifts 4 times a day under normal use. Thanks, Chris

If a cooler is suggested, then how big.

Under the driving conditions you mention you shouldn't have a need for an add on cooler. 125K on the original transmission with moderate usage is pretty good indication of a well engineered transmission. You didn't say if you plan to keep the van but if you do then be sure to change the transmission fluid and filter at regular intervals. And if you want it to last a long time go with a good synthetic ATF like Amsoil when you do the next change

i don't think you could go wrong installing a cooler. heat is the main enemy of an automatic transmission. i think under normal driving conditions without towing anything or being in stop and go traffic the cooler that runs through the radiator probably does ok.

i think all in all a cooler would help keep the temp in the tranny down even more and that's a good thing.

If you plan on pulling anything that's very heavy at all I would if I was you. Hope you remembered before you installed your transmission to blow out the cooler lines. Because if they are clogged or your radiator is clogged then it will burn up and shell out your trans.

I would put one in just because those vans had weak tranny's and it could only help. Do your tranny service on it often and regularly.
