Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is the stage of sleep characterized by rapid movements of the eyes.
During a night of sleep, a person usually has about four or five periods of REM sleep, which are quite short at the beginning of the night and longer at the end. It is common to wake for a short time at the end of a REM phase. The total time of REM sleep per night is about 90-120 minutes for an adult. However, the relative amount of REM sleep varies considerably with age. A newborn baby spends more than 80% of total sleep time in REM (see also Active Sleep ), while people over 70 years old spend less than 10%. The average is 20%.

its REM sleep, it stands for Rapid Eye Movement, its the part of the sleep cycle that you dream, and move around and are the easiest to wake up. its that "restorative" sleep that leaves you feeling refreshed when you wake up while you are in this cycle, thats why if you have ever woke up having a dream and it was a good dream, you felt good probably and ready to start the day. not where as if you were woken up when you were not in REM sleep, but the deeper cycles that will leave you feeling grogy and tired.

It is the stage of sleep in which you experience the most vivid dreams, yet it is actually a less deep sleep. If you were to watch a person who is in REM sleep, you would watch their eyes dart back and forth, with their eyes closed of course.
People cycle into and out of REM several times during the night.
