It really really depend's on what kind of a game you are looking for. I have played Sims 2 and World of Warcraft, and many other game's for the PC. I loved Sims 2 the most because it's everything i love in a game. You can build your own house, decorate it....create your Sim's, make them have a family with pets and everything. But is that your type of game?
Maybe you are not into game's that play out aspects of life that you already live, or might live in the future. Maybe you want a game in which you become a hunter, and level and battle mystical creature's....if that's the case then you should get World of Warcraft.
All in all do a little research on the game's, find out what each one is about, don't just ask others which is the best PC game to buy. Because chance's are the game they like, wont always be the game you like. I know if i told my brother to get Sims 2 he wouldn't have been very happy with it...or me for that matter!
Good luck on whichever game finds you.

Personally I like The Sims 2 and the expansion packs, you can also just get The Sims and expansion packs if your computer doesn't hold games too well.
I also like Fable, you run around doing quests and stuff... what you do decides your path (good or evil) like if you help the townspeople or slaughter them.
And my other favorite game for the PC is actually an MMORPG, World of Warcraft... highly addicting though, but very fun.
