sim free means you buy the hand set and don't get a sim card, so you can put your own in. i.e. if you are pay as you go its just upgrading your phone that you don't get for free like on contract.And it can be open to all networks but you'd have to ask them in the shop to do that cos you can still buy a phone to any of the networks. i.e an orange phone wont take on o2 sim

sim free is a mobile that you can use any sim card from any network in and they usually cost a lot more then pay as you go/pre pay ones .

sim free means it is a handset only, that you are buying and can input any sim card from any network into it, even if you have a pay monthly or a prepay no matter what sim card you own it will work in the phone
