It is a bad idea to get anyone a pet for their birthday!! First of all...even if the person is "talking" about getting a pet, that might be all it is -- just talking. They might be unsure or not serious.

Second of all...while a pet may be the gift that keeps on giving (cuddle wise) it is a gift that will cost the person a lot of money. Unless you plan on buying all the supplies to go with the animal (food, dishes, leash, collar, etc.) your gift is actually going to cost your friend money. Also...what about veterinary bills? As soon as you hand over the pup you friend will have to take her dog to the vet for shots, wormer, etc. That is about a 200 dollar tab right there.

OK, so here is the deal. If you KNOW FOR A FACT that your friend REALLY wants a dog, and is ALLOWED TO HAVE one, go for it. But please don't empty your friends wallet in the mean time. Be prepared to give your friend, along with the puppy, the necessary items to feed, walk, and groom the dog. ALSO it would be a very nice gesture to pay for the first veterinary visit.

Good luck!

NEVER!!!! The main reason not to is in case that she really can't afford it, spend the time, etc. Dogs are a LOT of work and a LOT of responsibility. I know that I waited years to get one, until I was fully prepared to invest time and money that I finally had into my puppy.

If she really wants a dog, buy her dog toys *for when she gets the dog herself*, a leash, water and food bowls, etc. Starting up, if you want to call it that, is really really pricey. Buying some of the things she will need will help out tremendously.

Lets say she really does want the dog and has the time and money so you think you should buy her one. What happens if you choose the wrong gender? A dog with a massive temperment problem? Or choose a dog that has severe health problems by mistake? It really isn't worth it in the end.

Is she a responsible adult who is able to take care of a puppy and give it the time and love that it needs to succeed at being a well-mannered, well-behaved dog? If so, then she should choose her own. Go with her when she gets one and pay for the puppy if you really want to give one to her as a gift.

If she isn't a responsible adult, then the only dog you should be getting her is a stuffed toy dog from Toys 'R Us.

My dog was given to me as a gift but I picked the breed, the breeder, and the puppy. My boyfriend picked up the tab and still gets props for giving me the best gift EVER!

Oh a new puppy how great I think you should tell your friend that you would like to go with her and let her pick it out and then it will be your present to her. This will be her "puppy" and I think she might want to bond with the pup first and see how they get along.

You should NEVER buy pets for presents for birthdays. Even though i got my cat for my birthday. Dont buy her it unless you are sure that she will take good care of it and not abuse it or leave it.

Mabe talk to her about animals, see how much she knows about them and mabe if you do buy her a puppy then ask one of your other friends to buy her some manuals to tell her more about them!

Pets are for life.. not just for birthdays ;]

No...never, never, never! Let her do it herself if she reallly wants one. Dogs can be a BIG mistake if the wrong one is chosen and if you have anything to do with the decision it can cause strife between you. A very large percentage of dogs are given up in the first year or two also which means you have to consider your feelings if she decides that dog ownership isn't for her afterall. Let her do the research and bare the responsibility for the decision. Do something ELSE nice for her.

Dont do it, having a dog is a big responsibility its almost like having children. If she wants a dog she needs to get it herself, never buy dogs as a present unless you are giving them to your kids. Get her something that is not so demanding.

The majority of dogs in the pound are unwanted gifts, you dont want that to happen the dog you get

No way, don't!
If you want to get the puppy for her say "I'm gonna take you puppy shopping!" but don't get it for her.
Would you pick out a son for her? No, and dogs are family members and she has to find a dog that she clicks with, a dog with the personality she wants.
Trust me, let her pick out her dog.

Pet's like humans have different personalites and traits, it's best to let your friend decide what she wants. another idea might be to go with her and let her choose one and you pay for it. That way your still getting her what she wanted but she makes the final decision.
