i get it that you are using internet through cable to your desktop, you either have to buy a router to use the internet wirelessly, or can buy i desktop wireless card and make an ad hoc between both and share the internet connection from your desktop

If your PC has wireless, but you are accessing the internet via a network cable, you can bridge the connections and share the internet connection. You laptop would be using the internet connection thru the PC, which would slow them down. It would be better to use a wireless router. Most wireless routers have wired ports, so you could still connect your PC if it isn't capable of wireless connection.

It all depends on what type of internet access you already have, if your ISP has provided you with a modem/router combination then you only need a wireless access point, if your interface is only a modem then you will need to get a wireless router. A good way to check is to look at your IP properties, if your IP address starts with 192 or 10 then your ISP has provided you with a router, any other number means that your ISP has provided you with only a modem. To check, click on Start then Run, type in CMD and hit enter, in the command prompt type "ipconfig", without the quotes, and hit enter look at IP Address and you will know.
