You can blame it on the media! Some years ago the UK didn't have this obsession with celebrities - it was the royals that featured so highly in the news. In the US, however, the magazines and newspapers were full of celebrity coverage and I used to comment that they viewed their celebrities in the same way that the British, in general, viewed their royalty. Now, however, British media have become similarly obsessed and feed us a steady diet of celebrity trivia - it's a form of brainwashing and most of the British public are hooked; it's an addiction. More and more magazines in the same vein as Hello and Ok have appeared over the past few years and people buy them. The celebrities lives are more exciting than ours and they can be put on pedestals, or torn down, depending on the press they receive. It used to be the neighbours that were gossiped about, but now it's the lives of David and Victoria, or Michael and Catherine, etc! They've all become public property.

It's a psychological question. Most of us have normal lives, we're never (or infrequently in my case) in the papers or on television. We get up, look after the family, go to work, come home, watch TV, maybe go to the pub (or not in my case), go to sleep and then start it all over again.
Some people think that by talking about celebrities a bit of their exciting life will rub off onto them. Some people take it to extremes of course and try to contact the famous, thinking that once they talk to them in person, they will become one of their friends and then their life will be as exciting; that very rarely happens.
The only way to enjoy a life of fame and fortune is to do something that will make you famous but remember, once you are famous, your anonymity will be gone and lesser beings will want to reflect in your glory.

The celebrity gossip rags make lots of money. And the people who hang on every word and deed of celebs need to get a life.

It's show business...and political dynamics...and the work of celebrity PR teams that keeps the buzz going on popular celebs.
People either admire, envy....or maybe a mix of both--as they're taken in by PR hype and clamor to either see or find out the latest dish on their favorite celebs.
I don't envy celebs: they traded their privacy and normal life for a crazed one, where privacy is fleeting......and it's so often we hear celebs can't handle all that attention--and befall sad tragedies in their lives.

I don't think that people look up to celebrities at least I hope not, because some of them are not worth looking up to at all. I think that Oprah is because she does a lot to help out others that are less fortunate. But the likes of Victoria Beckham, Jade Goody, Britney Spears I hope that no one looks up to them because what do and what have they done that makes them worthy?

I don't look up to celebs at all....I have my own life to be getting on with & really couldn't care less what the celebs are up to...
Mad isn't it? people build them up then proceed to pull them down again....jealousy I think is the root of it.....we all come out on the side of the "under-dog" but once they no longer are under-dogs then people get pissed off with em & want to see them brought to their knees.....I think for the girls they're filled with crap day after day about how gorgeous female celebs are so when they're caught on an off day it kinda makes people feel good that they're not so perfect afterall......

Maybe because they sing songs people like, act in films people like, or maybe because they're rich and if they find out you look up to them, they'll give you cash.

Because they are held up as an example of something to aspire to. We don't look up to real heroes in this country anymore, we simply look up to overpaid, generally talentless, ignorant, show offs. It's a sad state of affairs.
