Necessity (if there is a huge forest fire raging but I can burn a field of corn between the forest and nearby town, then I can claim the defense of necessity because by burning the corn field I prevented the fire from spreading to the town; lesser of two evils)
Self-defense (I killed the guy because he had a knife and he was attacking me, threatening me with death or serious bodily harm; if I didn't shoot him he would have killed me)
There are random defenses that people just make up, but these are just two that are often used, and can apply to different crimes.
