When you hear about earthquakes in Indonesia, famine in Africa, floods in India, do we really have a case for grumbling in England?

Basically, we're English, if we didn't talk about such banal subjects as the weather, we'd actually have to get to know each other and that's just not cricket.

Plus, it rains a lot, we have a lot of diverse weather and you never know what it's going to do one hour to the next sometimes never mind one day to the next. In hot countries, they don't need to talk about the weather because it's hot and dry, everyone knows it's hot and dry and they know tomorrow will be the same (Saudi is a good example). We simply have more to talk about and it wouldn't be British not to moan about it.

And isn't it great that rain is the only climatic downer we do have to moan about?

Its because it is a subject we have universally in common and lets be honest an easy conversation starter.
As the British are not the most at ease when meeting strangers it is an inoffensive way to start talking.

you find the better you know someone the less you talk about the weather unless it has a bearing on what you both had planned for that day.

We've been doing it for centuries. Why stop now. We have our droughts to. Last year, for instance, we had a hosepipe ban. I personally hate the summer (too hot) I love the winter. Although it was pretty mild. We also have earthquakes, but most are so small that we don't notice. And we have big floods. So I guess our climate is a bit like all the countries you mentioned.

We shouldn't really.........we're lucky we have a very varied climate and obvious seasons...we have enough rain to grow our crops and it rarely gets too hot. This year's been a little wierd we haven't really had a 'winter', it's only been sub zero for about 10 days in total.
On days like this, when it's cold but sunny, it makes me happy to be alive.
It'll probably chuck it down later though and i've got the washing out! Doh!

Good point. I personally think that the UK climate is just right, we have a bit of everything, nothing too extreme. People should learn to lighten up a bit and concentrate on making themselves feel happier rather than letting something like the waether govern their moods.

We all moan everywhere we are.
I'd like to be in England, and get away from all this -16 degree weather with all its blowing snow.
I can moan pretty good sometimes.
Compared to other places, like the ones you named, I suppose it could always be worse.

Correction, we moan about the weather.

We have the best climate in the world and the worst weather.

Because we are a nation of habitual moaners. Moaning is what we do best. In fact, if moaning was an olympic sport, we'd be carting away gold medals by the barrow-load.
