Then The Sylvester and Tweety episodes would be no more. And the cartoon wouldn't have a purpose anymore.

Because they wouldn't be able to make any more toons then. The enjoyment is watching what Sylvester will try to do to get to Tweety.

The same reason that the coyote can never get the road runner - we won't be able to watch it any more and the whole point is to laugh at the lengths that they go to get their meal (in this case tweety) and not get it or tweety wins.
