I am playing to go to Egypt in April and wondered which is the best area to stay in to be close to all the best sites and tourist places so to speak. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The pyramids are in Luxor or Cairo. Of the two, the better resort is Luxor. But for culture and to see real Egypt you should head for Cairo.

I would suggest that you make an effort to visit Cairo and the pyramids a few miles out of the city and then go down to Luxor and see the temples and tombs there.
There is just so much more to Cairo than the pyramids, but they will make you gasp in awe!
There is The Citidel were you can see just how huge Cairo really is.you can look over the old part of the city across the Nile and out as far as the Pyramids, huge even from there!
Old Cairo is amazing with the old Coptic churches and the Roman Tower, and plenty more also Islamic Cairo where you feel you have walked into another world.Tiny winding streets and houses that almost meet at the top and the serene and beautiful mosques.
Everyone is just so helpful, extra friendly and will give you a huge smile of welcome.
I am not exagerating, that is just the way it is there. That is why I love Egypt!
You have to go to Khan el Khalili its the best place to find everything Egyptian.
Remember to bargain. Its fun and addictive once you get used to it.
Never feel embaressed as it is expected to bargain over prices!
A visit to the Cairo museum is a must, and finish your day with a easy, slow felucca ride on the Nile at sunset.
Try and start your days sightseeing as early as you can due to the crowds and the heat.
Remember take a waterbottle and keep it full all the time with bottled water.
Egypt is safe! I feel easier walking on the sreet in Cairo or Luxor, than I do in Melbourne, Australia.
Be sensible with what you wear. Its just a case of having respect as you are visiting an Islamic country. Even if it is very tolerant and moderate in its approach to Islam.
Respect gets respect. Where ever you go in the world.
Egypt is safe. But the traffic is absolutly crazy!
Try and see as much as you possibly can.
It is said that 70% of Egypts history is in the area around Luxor.
For example The Valley of The Kings. Deir El Bahri (Hatshepsuts temple), The Ramesseum, Medinat Habu, The amazing Karnak Temple complex, The Luxor Temple complex, that is a few.
Then you can go on to Aswan and see the beautful island temples and Abu Simbel, again so much to see and do!
You can catch a Nile cruise in Luxor and go to Aswan and see the temple at Abu Sibal, built by the incredible Pharaoh Rameses 11. You will be amazed at how it is constructed directly into a cliff. Then think of this,to build the Aswan dam and not loose the temple under the waterline.
They dismantled it and lifted it, piece by piece, up the cliff above the projected waterline.
Every pieces was marked and resasembled like a giants Leggo game.
What an engineering feat!
To get there from Luxor on a cruise boat(in luxury) is not much more than a couple of nights at a 3-4 star hotel. so it is well worth it.
I would advise you get a copy of The Lonley Planet guide to Egypt. Everything you could want to know, including the recomended hotels tours and prices is in it. Plus all kinds of information .
I guarantee you will be so glad you did.
It is such a shame to come all that way and only see one or two aspects of what is Egypt.
Why not spend a couple of days in Cairo ,then head to Luxor and beyond.
You can get to Luxor by train and it is so cheap.Even if you take the more expensive sleeper train, it is by no means expensive.
There really is so much to see in both Cities and their surrounds.
Each is magic, but they are so very differant.

there are two main tourist areas for ancient egypt. first Cairo, this is the capital city and like most cities a very busy and noisy place. i have to say i do not like cairo much its too big for my taste. but if you stay there you will see the pyramids at giza thats where all the photos of pyramids are taken and the sphinx, also in cairo is the museum, ( its stunning) the most important collection of ancient egyptian artifacts including of course most of the artifacts from tutankhamuns tomb, you could also visit near by saqarra and see the very first pyramid, the step pyramid and some old tombs. and dashur more pyramids. There are NO pyramids in Luxor
BUT personally i think Luxor is a far more interesting place. i love it and i adore the things to see there. Luxor is about one hours flight from cairo if you go there you will see, tutankhamuns tomb, and many others in the valley of the kings, you could also visit the tombs in the valley of the queens, and the nobles(outstanding) you can also see the artisans village ( where the workers used to live) and the temples of hatshepsut, medinet habu, the rammesum, setti's temple and Karnak, luxor temple, and luxor museum.
Luxor is much smaller and there is so much to see there that even after many visits i have stilll not seen it all and every time i go back i marvel at the wonderful things i see. so what do you want tomb paintings and temples in luxor, or pyramids and museum in cairo. there are other places of course but they are more remote and not so much to see. If i was you i would take a time to visit luxor and if you can afford it take a two centre holiday in both places. where to stay, well depends what you like but the hotels at giza in cairo are usually quieter, the meridian is lively and fun but the mena house is a wonderful place to stay, The gold on the ceiling in the foyer is just that i watched them touching up the gold leaf one night. in luxor there are many hotels go for the best you can afford, my personal fav is the sheraton but many others are also good and if your going in april..... maybe i will see you there. i hope you enjoy it as much as i do

Movenpick Pyramids - Mena House Oberoi - Le Meridien Pyramids
These hotels are located close to the Pyramids and you can see the Pyramids in Mena House or Le Meridien. I recommend 10 days or 14 days tour as follow:
2 days in Cairo visiting Pyramids, Saqqara, Museum, citadel, Khan El Khalily bazar area
Overnight in sleeping train from Cairo to Luxor
7 days Nile cruise starting from Luxor. It's full board and the best way to make all the basic visits in the south.
after the Nile cruise you can go to Hurghada for 3 or 4 days to relax and enjoy the beach before you go home.
It's already late if you didn't book till now for April. I recommend you 4 or 5 stars hotel in Cairo, 5 stars Nile Cruise and 4 stars hotel in Hurghada. I wish you a nice trip and you can contact me for any details or information any time.

well the pyramids/Spinx are in Cairo, i done a day trip there and it isn't the nicest place in the world, i wouldn't recommend it if your travelling alone or with other women. if your not married then wear a wedding ring, that's what i did and it does help. i stayed in sharm el sheik which is great for diving not not if your after all the famous sites. maybe try a Nile cruise, should stop at all the good places, ie valley of the kings, the Spinx ect..

We came back from Egypt in November. another person gave what I was going to say. we went with them fantastic looked after us like royalty , no complaints no hassle every thing was at our pace. when we where in the Karnak temple at the ticket office we heard a giude saying you have to be on the bus in 30 mins, we needed 3 hours in there, and still went back the day after to see some more, but if you are just wanting to stay somewhere go to Luxor and we reccomend the myegypt hotel because its so close to all the ancient sites and its not a big hotel more like a B&B, wish I was coming with you, Egypt is a lovely place so don't plan go. look up www.myegypt.co.uk.
Coming back on the thompsons plane home I was talking to people that I did not think they where even in the same Country as I went to on holiday, so many complaints the woman sitting next to me put on the questionare never going back to that hell hole.and they stayed 5*.
