Just take a 10 X 10 (=100%) plot for easy calculation. As it is about percentiles it can be any size you want...10 X 10 makes a cool 100 (%) and gives the right answer immediately.

Take 10 % of the top (10 - 10% =9)
and 20 %of the side. (10 - 20% =8)

You are left with 9 X 8 = 72 (%)

Easy as cake. Like taking candy bars from a very small kid.

To find the area of a rectangle you multiply length times width. Our length in this example is L(.9) - the original length times 90%.
Our width is W(.8) - the original width times 80%.
Multiplying our length and width gives us L(.9) X W(.8) = LW(.72).
This shows us we are going to have 72% of our original area remaining.

when 10% is cut from length...remaining is 90%
when 20% is cut from breadth.. remainign is 80%

so area is 72% remaining of original...
