The assistant looked at me as if I was mad, saying "we do not sell wasps here" I did point out to him that he had one in the window the previous day when I walked past, but he still maintained that he did not have any. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

He's lieing. He keeps them out back in the dumpster, housed in open Pepsi cans. One time I even heard him refer to them as "free range wasps". Something is up with that guy.

Maybe he REALLY didn't sell any wasps and just kept a wasp in a cage/plastic in the window

Perhaps he thought you didn't look like the type of person who could properly care for a wasp.I would report him to trading standards for dicrimination.
