ok, I've driven here quite a bit, but a recent trip up to Penang got me wondering.
An example. I'm tooling along on the merc with the cruise control set on 120, the roads are pretty empty with a sparse car here and there. I pass someone that is in the left lane and I'd guess they were doing 90-100 with no one in front of them. A few moments later the car that was in the slow lane is coming up on me FAST. I get over to the left lane to let them by and they go screaming past me. Maybe a minute later I'm passing them again without having touched my cruise control at all.
That example happened to me several times and I noted it was a malay almost every time. Do they have penis envy or what is the problem? The merc would roast them if I felt like it, but why???
The other bother is the tailgating, during rush-hour traffic in georgetown I was constantly having people up my bum, but I couldn't get out of the way and there was nowhere to go.
Any opinions as to why this happens?

I understand the offensive driving for the most part, but sometimes it is just stupid, like in Georgetown with heavy traffic, car right in front of me, car right beside me, yet some turd has to tailgate me as if I have somewhere to go, when the car I drive probably costs more than he'll make in his entire life and if he hit me I'd have to enslave him until the end of time.
I won't even get into the Malay on their scooters, I wish I had a great big american SUV with a brush guard on the front to mow them down when they start driving like tools.
I know it is just different driving habits, but I'd really like the understand the psyche that cases these people to drive like this, then maybe I wouldn't get bent when they do.

That's the way it is in Malaysia. Malaysians are crazy drivers, making their road death toll one of the highest in the World.
Malays are over-tense and nervous, while Chinese are selfish and give way only in exceptional cases. Malays like to race on the roads.
Yes, they do have penis envy, as researches confirmed that all Malaysians (Malay, Chinese, Indian) have small penis, about two inches less than whites and blacks. That's why many products believed to enlarge penis are sold on local market.
Malaysian driving also makes me crazy, you're not the only one.
Malays don't like if somebody overtakes them, they'll try to overtake you back and then they'll slow down. It's just their power-play. Don't bother them too much, you can't change anything. I like your idea about SUV with wipers for scooters.
People on motorcycles, sometimes bringing whole family on one bike, will go zig-zag around you, from front and behind, from right and left, and will sometimes even reverse on your lane. It's against traffic rules but nobody cares.
Remeber one important rule if you have an accident with a Malay and it's his fault: punch him, take money and go. Because traffic police will always back up Malays against non-Malays, so it'll be like it's your fault even if it isn't. And Malay will never admit it's his fault.
Tailgating is another thing besides racing that makes Malays feel like men, since those who do that are physically weak, ugly and have a small wee-wee, they express their manliness on the road.
Asians are considered to be the worst drivers on this planet.
Don't even mention constant pressing on horn. Malaysian in a car is a man in his own world... Being in a car is a way to satisfy their fantasies. It gives them feeling of strength and power. But if you ask them they are very peaceful and polite people...

That has happend to me several times before and they are usually done by Malays. Several decades ago, many Malays could not afford cars and when seen with a luxury car, they are usually just the driver. The local term is "Ahmad" which would directly relate to "James" in the UK. In short, you hit the nail on its head, it is just plain penis-envy seeing someone in a Mercs overtaking them in their Proton.
In Penang, there are just too many cars in this historical city with narrow roads. This is still not a good excuse for poor road manners and your experience is very believable. These people should go on bikes and weave themselves around traffic and hopefully wrap themselves around a lamp post.

Well u get that kind of problem everywhere in malaysia.
i also have that kind of problem with singaporean driving in malaysia...
well its not fair if u said malay drivers always behave like that..
most of my encounters driving throughout malaysia is chinese driver or even indians.. some may be singaporean..
less encounter with malay drivers..
they drive such as that they own the road.. if u notice most of my encounters is in big cities such as KL and JB..
they also have gangsters if they do get involved with accident..
i've also encountered chinese giving an F*** word on the road..
but Mate..
i think u r using the wrong lane & driving slow on the right lane.. most of the singaporean do that in malaysia,..
they end up in a ditch somewhere (accident)..
most recent is during CNY in cameron highland..
Shayna :- I have nothing against singaporean, i is just a fact. (true story)

Malaysian have to driving adequate or approved driving license, most of them are brought. Even the traffic police didn't pass their Malaysia traffic laws. Lots of traffic offenders pay their "fine " directly to the police and the offend is squared

What AQ said, is TOTALLY TRUE !!
Eventhough im malaysian chinese, i dont like malaysian drivers too. chinese drivers speed whenever they have a cute gal with them. cutting indians line is like commiting adultery with his wife, he will cut u back 1000 times. malay drivers drive as if there are no traffic rules/traffic lights. to sum it all, bad !!
What AQ said:
Remember one important rule if you have an accident with a Malay and it's his fault: punch him, take money and go. Because traffic police will always back up Malays against non-Malays, so it'll be like it's your fault even if it isn't. And Malay will never admit it's his fault.
ITS ABSOLUTELY TRUE TRUE TRUE !
a malay bastard cut my line in a split second, resulting a crash.
when we reach police station, he was shaking hands with all the officers there. like old friends!! while i was making report and claiming he cut me, the sarjan told me, i was wrong, i cut his line !! and if i dont admit, he will bring this matter to the court and judge me wrong and lock me in prison, all kinds of threat !!
so after the summons/insurance was solved, a few months passed, i was slapped with another summon saying that i was a reckless driver, and license will be revoked !!
"Tailgating is another thing besides racing that makes Malays feel like men, since those who do that are physically weak, ugly and have a small wee-wee, they express their manliness on the road."
their manliness? i say its RETARDNESS
I've shared this experience with many friends, and they confirmed, its TRUE TRUE TRUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
damn !! u spoilt my day for today !
and i continue my HORROR CAR stories !! i break on red light, and the chinese RETARD crashed me from behind. he told me i suppose to speed immediately bcoz the traffic light is going to red. i said there is a traffic camera there, so i had to break. he said its already spoilt, no one cares. then he calls his family which is nearby, his dad showed up, persuaded me to pay for his sons damage. but luckily by-standers said, its his FAKING SONS RETARDNESS, so im not suppose to pay. so both sides didnt pay.

if you done nothing wrong maybe here are the probabilities:
1. you forgot to shut down your high beam light while behind another car.
2. maybe your headlights are too bright.
