Tori Amos was driving to one of her gigs. She picked up a hitch-hiker on route - an obsessed fan who was also on his way to the gig. When he saw who she was, he pulled out a knife, raped her, then ran off in to the night.

Tori carried on to the gig and did the show, saying nothing about the rape until after the show. When her manager asked her how the hell she could just carry on with it, she said "He didn't rape me, he raped Tori Amos the singer."

Could you manage to sorrt yourself out like that?

Is that a true story? God! I would have fallen completely apart! She must be strangely strong.

Yes. Maybe its not healthy or cool bananas or whatever at that moment, but you know what? That is tramatic! I mean traumatic!!!! And we do what we can to survive it! There is no set rule or way to cope with something like that. If it worked for her then why the heck not? Besides she went on to form a rape support group and to sing some DAMN FINE songs that expressed her rage, hurt and anger. Way to go TORI!!!

I'd not heard about that..but it makes me respect the hell out of Ms Amos. It takes a HUGE character to endure something like that and still put on a show. I'm not sure I'd be strong enough to do that. Ms. Amos, if by any chance you are reading this..my hat is off to you!

IF he raped 'the singer' how did she do the show?? And, no I don't think I could. The show would consist of me passed out on stage and drooling.

i cant figure out whether to pity her because of the rape or admire her courage to live by the premis that who she is on stage is not who she is in real life, something a fan could not do, she is a "performer" an ideal. However you have to also wonder is it her mechanism of shutting off/separating to save having to deal with the reality???

no, definitely not. you have to commend her on being able to seperate the event from her brain and continue doing the show, but at the same stage, it resulted in a lot of doubt, at the time if i remember correctly and also the practical process of getting the medical done was also kinda sacrificed

err...nope. But in reality, I am sure that would be a philosophy that someone famous has to take regarding several different issues...but rape certainly not one of them.

no but i understand what she did! he didnt rape her as a person, he raped who he thought she was! its a defense mechanism ive seen people do before, its the only way they know how to cope and go on with life without it affecting the way they are with others, namely their children!
