Why do some care for popularity in situations such as elections?

Well the libs liked the system just fine until the 2004 elections. At that point they wanted to throw out the electoral system in exchange for popular vote.

It's stupid isn't it. How come most people can name the winner of The Survivor, but can't name their two senators. Weve created a generation of privleded, shallow thinkin people who care more about celebs and sports figures then they do about their contry. Hollywood loves Obama, even thought nobody knows where he stands for forwhat. He only has two years in the senate. Let's be honest, he's young, goodlooking and black and if that's what the qualifications are for President, then we might as well give up

Because too many Americans are too stupid to find out where the candidate stands on issues...mainly because they don't know what the issues ARE, couldn't understand them if they heard them and can't read well enough to understand the written word.

So they look at things they do understand - like: what color is he/she, what gender is he/she, why does she wear pants suits, who is sleeping with who, what is his/her sex life like, is he/she gay, is he/she "black enough", is he/she "white enough", does he/she believe in god and which one, what religion is he/she and on and on and on.

They are undereducated, uneducated, illiterate and fearful. They only parrot what they hear others like themselves say. They don't know how to find out information on their own due to lack of comprehension.
