When the screen is blank your pc are going through POST (Power On Self Test) checking all important componets.

Yes you can speed it up by disabling some of the services that you don't need. I have some link for you to guide on what to disable and what not.

A minute and a half is a long time for your screen to be blank. It is normal for your screen to flicker some while your computer is booting, but not for that long. I would say run a virus scan as well as a spyware scan, and remove any viruses or spyware on your machine. Viruses CAN get into your Master Boot Record and load upon boot. If that is the case, you would need to make sure your anti-virus loads from your autoexec.bat file to ensure it is scanning as your computer runs through the boot process.

Chances are that you have too many processes running at one time, and they are begin running at start up. To check this, once you have fully booted up, hit control, alt, and delete at the same time, this will bring up the task manager, look under processes, you should really have no more than about 44 processes running at one time. If you have more, this will greatly slow down the boot up process since the computer is having to take its time getting all those programs and applications up and running.
You will have to do some research to learn how to stop all those extra processes, decide which ones are essential and which ones you can stop.
Hope this helps.

Im not positive, but it may have something to do with your registry. There is a free registry cleaner available at:
http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm. Cleaning out the registry may help speed it up a little. I dont know a whole lot about registry, but I do know that unless you know what you're doing, dont manually go and try to change anything, that could be disasterous. If cleaning it out doesnt help, look around on the net. "Google" words like "slow boot up registry". Im pretty sure you can find out quite a bit. good luck!

I agree with GK. What's happening is that programs that you have running in the background are loading up.

Defragging does NOT compress your files. It simply rearranges them so that they are contiguous (next to one another), hence, faster to load.

POST (Power On Self Test) happens before Windows is loaded. However, the link provided by BenC is worthwhile you taking a look. It goes, in great detail, about what files are loaded, and which ones can safely be excluded from loading up.

How much RAM is installed on your PC?

Use CPU-Z ( http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-139.zip ) to find out.

If you have 256MB or lesser, that might be the cause of it blanking out after the Windows logo.

To speed it up, identify redundant startup programs.

You can use Starter ( http://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html ) or What's Running ( http://www.whatsrunning.net/WhatsRunning/Download/WhatsRunning2_2_Setup.exe ) to help you manage it.

Besides defragmenting your hard disk, you also need to make sure that your PC is clean of malware.

Refer to this post ( http://www.sgforums.com/?action=post_display&post_id=6019548 ) to keep your PC clean of malware.

Some other ways to speed up your PC ( http://www.sgforums.com/?action=thread_display&thread_id=190620 ). Tweak XP ( http://www.tweakxp.com/ ) also has a good collection.
