If for no other reason than contrast. If homosexuality didn't exist why would people fear it? If it didn't exist why would we care?
For anyone to think/feel/believe something to be wrong that something has to exist.
Homosexuality exists because, if nothing else, those who oppose it, fear it, hate it, and, even (and far less judgmentally) question it need it to.
I don't assume you are homophobic based on your question. I merely attempt to answer a seemingly simple question on a seemingly simple level.
On a more realistic level are we, humans, not more than just our genitalia? Does everything that defines our sexual and intimate nature reside on the X or Y chromosome? Can our genitalia and or X/Y chromosome really determine who we will fall in love with? What if she has brown eyes? What if he has red hair? What if she has a penis? And, seriously, what if she or he is an androgen? Is he or she not worthy of love and an intimate relationship because he or she was born with aspects of both genders?
Human nature is a lot more complex than ovaries or testes and eggs and sperm. And just because it's human does not mean it isn't nature even if it seems counter-productive to the species. Human nature is unique in that it involves considerations of the self as well as the population in manners instinct can never account for.
I'm agnostic; I won't account for God or any similar theory. I will, however, admit my ignorance in the design of nature, if there even is one. Maybe, at the very, very least, homosexuality is some way in which evolution has provided us a sort of check. Maybe, in having the ability to fall in love, to care that much about a creature without 1/2 (or, ick, more) our own DNA, we, as a species, have this one little advantage in reducing the rate at which we overpopulate ourselves into extinction.
Maybe everything is exactly as it should be.

I'm with madge f on this one, why do we keep on referring to extremes such as "gay" and "straight". Why cant we refer to humans simply as "sexual animals" and accept that is the nature of the beast. If we think of a continuum between the two extremes then everyone will fall somewhere on it. The position we occupy will depend on the circumstances prevailing at the time. It is well known for example, by people in the prison service, that prisoners incarcerated for some time will often obtain sexual relief in a homosexual situation, when released from prison, no further homosexual contact is made. This is true by the way, for both males and females.

There was a presentation in my Psych of Personality class talking about a professor discussing the possiblities of homosexuality as being genetic (from an evolutionary/biological perspective). He talked about how it could be advantageous for a guy to have some feministic qualities because it is what girls like and perhaps indicates he is more likely to stick around. That's why it hasn't died out. He also talked about some sort of mechanism in a guy's dna that could potentially push him into homosexuality. He also talked about genetic similarities between gay guys and females. He only focused on males though and sometimes his points seemed a bit odd and extreme. However, it was an interesting perspective. Your evolutionary perspective made me think of the first part I talked about though. Anyways, that's just something I heard, and it's not necessarily something I agree on. Just another perspective.

The only way to imagine how homosexuals (the overtly gay ones) fitted in with primitive man would be to look at how they lived in the American Indian cultures before the coming of the white man. Apparently they were more than tolerated, and even played a prominent part in the religious life of the tribes. They DID stay home and help the women.
Those who were not 'overtly' gay, I presume went about doing their warrior bit, and then came back to the tepee and did their own version of 'scalping', if you know what I mean!

Gay men throughout the ages have been a part of the "creative" side of cultures. You won't just find gay men in the theatres and fashion palaces of the present. They were in the historical equivalents in many societies through the ages.
Also, as a straight man, I find gay men a bit of a relief as they are not being macho and competitive (for women or resources) in the way a lot of straight men are.
I'm not sure about your analogy, though.

Homosexual men and women are as much a part of nature as any heterosexual and they have always been around.
Maybe the purpose is to stop over population and the more over populated we get the more homosexual people will be born.

A) birthcontrol... too many cavemen, not enough food, shelter or resources
B) Stress relief and better pack harmony.
Ie look at the creative trends and entertainment skills, especailly say campness to entertain the kids to take pressure off parents.
Plus like you mentioned.

They were created for the same reason as the drones in a bee-hive to keep the rest of us happy. If it were not for homosexuals (G.A.Y.s) who would make us Straight As a Die (S.A.D.s) amused?
