I've heard good things about Stock Investing For Dummies and Investing For Dummies. A friend of mine still refers back to the first one on a regular basis

Depending on your background and level of economic saviness, I would recommend Jeffrey Hooke's "Security Analysis on Wall Street". It's published by Wiley, which is a leader in the financial text publication arena. He is a bit more technical than a person without a microeconomics class might like, but does a really good job showing how securities are priced and the drivers behind the pricing.

You need to buy two books to get started. One would be a book on technical analysis. These books are all somewhat alike. The other book is Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefevre.
