I have stretch marks on the backs on my legs (horrid things!) and a friend of mine kind of threw a knife down in the kitchen (she burnt her hand, so I can't blame her!) and it cut open one of my stretch marks. It was bleeding a fair bit, but stopped now. I put some bandaids on and applied pressure, but my mum says it needs stitching. I should probably just go to the hospital, but I don't like the place. So, does a cut stretch mark generally need stitching or would it heal itself?

Thanks for any help!

if it stoped bleeding and you don't mind a scar just disinfect it with iodine and you will be ok . unless it gets infected and iodine will stop that

this depends on how deep the cut is (has nothing to do w/it being a stretch mark)

-can you spread the cut open more than 1/2 an inch apart?
-is there fatty tissue coming out of the wound?
-did it take a while to stop the bleeding?

if you answered yes to any of those questions then i would take a trip to the er. they have stuff called dermabond, which is a special kind of superglue designed for cuts. if your wound isn't that deep-the dermabond can be used and will be absorbed by your body in about a week or so. if actual stitches are required-the procedure is pretty simple. the area will be numbed and stitched.

if you do need stitches, it would be best to do so to avoid the wound getting infected and scarring when healing. infection is the biggest concern-you don't want germs to get into the wound.

either go into the er or make an appt within 24 hours to see your dr

for now

-wash the wound well with warm water and mild soap
-apply a thin layer of neosporin to it (if you are able to spread the cut open-don't apply anything-just go to the er)
-wrap your leg in gauze wrap to keep out dirt and germs
-take ibuprofen for pain. 200-400mg every 6 hours as needed but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours.

if you decide to stay home. report to the er at once if you develop the following

-the cut begins to swell or becomes more red or puffy
-the cut begins to ooze liquid of any kind
-you develop a fever of 100.5 or higher
-the area surrounding the cut becomes puffy, tender to touch,or hot

these are all signs of infection and you'll need medical treatment asap

it does not matter if it was a stretch mark or not... how deep is the cut? if it's deeper than lets say the thickness of a quarter or runs very long then it needs to be stitched to heal properly...

does it open up when you walk or move? if it does then it needs stitching, otherwise it may get worse and you might tear up some more tissues or arteries...

yes, the stretch mark is irrelevant it depends on the cut itself. If its deep and wont stop bleeding go to the hospital, it's not worth leaving.

You should probably see a doctor, it has nothing to do with it being a stretch mark, it has everything to do with how deep the cut is, stop being a wuss and go to the doctor.
