Betty the Crow

Meet Betty
Cows, donkeys, otters, woodpeckers, foxes, rats and grey squirrels, they're all here. But the programmes we've made about animal intelligence are invariably dominated by examples of avian acumen. It was among the corvids that we found the star of this show. Betty is a female Caledonian crow and long-time resident at Oxford University.

When you see Betty in the flesh, you really get a sense of her remarkable intelligence. The inquisitiveness, the fascination with anything new, the way she cocks her head to study a novel object, the impression that she's working things out in her head before going into action.

Her ability to figure things out is demonstrated by the tasks she performs. Food is placed at the bottom of a tube too deep for her to reach with her beak, inside a tiny basket with a little hoop on top. Betty is given a thin wire, about 7cm long. She picks up the wire in her beak and sticks it into the tube. She can reach the food but can't raise it to the top. Then, extraordinarily, Betty carries the wire over to the wall, pokes its end into a little hole in the plaster, then pulls upwards with her beak to fashion a primitive hook. Betty flies back to the tube, inserts the wire down the shaft and through the hoop on the basket. She pulls the wire, and up comes the basket. Triumphantly, Betty eats her reward.

According to experts, this feat may make Betty the first animal, other than a human, to fashion a tool for a specific task using novel materials not found in the wild. Clever, or what?

I am assuming that you do not consider humans as animals. That assumption made, the next question to answer would be how is intelligence measured. Most scientists use the animal's ability to use tools as an indicator of animal intelligence. That does seems to leave some animals at a distinct disadvantage because of their lack of appropriate body structure. I think this is probably why so many people say the chimp is the most intelligent. So my answer is going to be a question. To which type of intelligence are you referring? If I were forced to name an animal, I would include chimps, pigs and dolphins.

Bonobos are the great apes which are most like humans.

The scientific name for the Bonobo is Pan paniscus. As their DNA is more than 98% identical to that of Homo sapiens [3], they are more closely related to humans than to gorillas.

Bonobos are capable of passing the mirror-recognition test for self-awareness. They communicate through primarily vocal means, although the meanings of their vocalizations are not currently known; however, humans do understand their facial expressions[3] and some of their natural hand gestures, such as their invitation to play. Two Bonobos, Kanzi and Panbanisha have been taught a vocabulary of about 400 words which they can type using a special keyboard of lexigrams (geometric symbols), and can respond to spoken sentences.

there is no such thing as cleverist. you cant compre an apple, a grape, a banana and an orange and ask which is more a fruit?

all animals have different types of intelligence geared towards their needs and capabilities. most domesticated animals show intelligence and lack of intelligence much as humans do. its all down to the individual

although in my opinion the animal that has the nearest intelligence to humans besides monkeys is parrots. they display the IQ and EQ of a five year old child.

The most common answer tends to be either:

a) Dogs, because they can do things you tell them to do.
b) Cats, because they don't do things you tell them to do.

On a more serious note, there's quite a few apes who have done remarkable feats in learning communication systems, learning limited sign languages or communicating through symbols.
