an office pool is a sort of gambling among employees at a company on a sporting event. participants contribute money to a fund, and then there is a competition for the money based on the outcome of the sporting event. sometimes participants guess the winning teams in tournament, high score for correct pix wins. sometimes particpiants win based on the score of an event at the half, quarter, completion. office pools are big at basketball tournament and Super Bowl time.

A betting pool, or office pool if done at work, is a form of gambling where gamblers pay a fixed price into a pool and make a selection on some outcome, usually related to sport. The pool is evenly divided between those that have made the correct selection. There are no odds involved, each winner's payoff depends simply on the number of gamblers and the number of winners.

when people at work get together, pick different dates, and bet that something will happen
FOR EXAMPLE:
John got married last Friday, maybe the people he works with don't like him so there's an "office pool" for a divorce date. So I could put down $20 on December 4... whoever is closest wins all the money
