Prepare a portfolio of your best work (slides or digital though digital is best. Yes, you'll need to dish out money either way). Look into colleges with good art programs or art schools. Add to your portfolio anything that their applications require. Apply to the schools of your choice and a few that aren't. Go to the best one you can afford after loans and scholarships (see the financial aid dept's of said schools).
Your major will most likely be illustration to begin with. You like to draw, well, that's illustration. You can go fine arts but it's a lot more work in a lot more ways.
Choose a type of illustration. You can do technical drawings for medical, biological, botanical, mechanical, etc... type things. You can draw for children's books. You can be an architect, fashion or interior designer, a car designer, even, and adapt your drawing ability to those fields while learning more about those fields.
Comic books. Most illustration majors I knew started out here. Animation, too.
But go to school. It's 4 little tiny years and worth every penny and minute of it. You will learn things you can't do now. You will face criticism and competition in a safe environment that actually works with you to help you improve as opposed to facing those in the real world without any training on how to deal with it. You will learn new ways to look at things. You will see the competition.
Almost but no where near as important as all of the above: you will have far greater access to far better jobs. You will have opportunities for internships. You will get references from teachers and such.
There is, quite simply, no way you can go wrong in going to school for this. Even if you have to take out loans up your *** you will only benefit. The education and ability you gain will help you make more money. I can promise you that without an education your income will still be far, far lower than it will be after you've graduated, gotten a job and are still paying off the loans.
Your future is well worth the money.
