I get a strong smell of fuel in the cabin. The fuel lines are fine. I was told that it may be an exhaust problem. I have noticed the exhaust tip is very black (unusually so). The fuel consumption has been very poor since this has started to happen. I checked another forum and it mentioned a carbon filter under the drivers front wing but did not eleborate

Can anyone help

Ps can't afford to be ripped off by Renault mechanics

Hi

Has the vehicle been running badly? If so then you could have a failed coil pack which is allowing unburnt fuel to be thrown out and it is not unknown with Renaults. The emissions light usually illuminates on the dash when the coil pack fails or the emissions are out of spec.

Two more highly likely reasons are the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirc) valve being stuck open, or the O2 sensor being at fault.

You could also have a faulty ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor or a faulty MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor, or a hole or leak in the exhaust which is confusing the O2 sensor into switching low to increase the fuelling.

Either way, over fuelling is BAD because it wrecks the catalytic convertor and I would advise you not to drive the vehicle until it has been repaired. If you feel you must, then drive it to a repair facility or better still have a mobile mechanic come to you.

Cheers and all the very best

Your fuel mixture is obviously too rich. It could be several things. An oxygen sensor is one of them, it is not expensive to replace. You might want to consider getting some diagnostics run on it for trouble codes. Do auto parts stores in your area run these codes for free? They do in the States, with the hope that you will then buy your parts from them. That would keep you from getting close to that mechanic. Also they can show you where the parts are and advise on the best way to replace them. Good Luck.

i could propose between the injectors is leaking. I even have seen this in the previous on the renault sixteen valve engine, it reason's undesirable beginning and while the engine is left idling for a on a similar time because it starts chugging as though the engine is misfiring quite, a rapid blip on the throttle and it clears. this is trouble-free to evaluate, the storage merely needs to do away with the injector rail, leaving the injectors linked to it, place the rail so each and all of the injector nozzles are seen. Then with each and all of the gasoline pipes linked to the rail they only ought to teach on the ignition. the gasoline pump will top the device and pressurise the gasoline rail, if between the injectors is defective they'll see small bubbles appearing interior the injector nozzle.

I would strongly suggest you get it seen to immediately by a qualified mechanic. Smelling strong fumes of petrol can signal serious danger - but also it may be nothing that serious. Hopefully though you will not get ripped off for just a simple job to fix it at the stealers. (dealers)

IMO, try and find a specialist Renault mechanic (time served but independant) who won't give you a whole list of work thats unnecessary.

Whilst this is not info about Renault cars... it still may be of interest to you. (I'm a VW Golf owner and get my car info from here)
