I just found out that my husband and I are pregnant (via test you buy at stores). We are guessing that I am about 1 month pregnant, however, I did have a glass of wine 2 evenings ago and about an equevalent of a glass the past 2 weeks each week. We have set an appointment with the doctor, but wanting to know b4 hand. Will those drinks have an affect on the baby, for instance fetal alcohol syndrome?

No, a couple of glasses of wine should not affect the baby. I wouldn't make a habit of it though. My doctor told me when I was pregnant that a little wine was okay.

Congratulations!

It IS harmful to drink while pregnant, but in order for the baby to have fetal alcohol syndrome you have to drink about 2 drinks a day...nearly every day. A glass of wine here or there doesn't appear to have an effect on baby. Most doctors advise you not to worry about moderate drinking or even a night of drunkeness before you know you are pregnant. The important thing is that this is not a repeated behavior as 1 or 2 occasions where the mother does not get drunk has virtually no effect. It's wonderful that you're so concerned, though! I'm sure you'll be a great mommy and your baby will be fine!

Oh, and a girl I know craved screwdrivers (vodka and oj!) while pregnant, and he doc said it was okay to have one every week as long as it was light on the vodka. Baby is fine.

I hope not, because I didn't know I was pregnant till I was almost 3 months along. I know I can't remember how much I had to drink during that time, but I know it was a lot. The thing is though, I hardly ever drink (like once or twice a year), but I just so happened to get drunk 2 or 3 times during that time period. My doctor said not to worry about it, but to not do it any more. During my last pregnancy I think I was drunk once. I don't know but maybe all the extra hormones firing up in me make me want to drink. Anyway my first son turned out completely fine. I think alcohol syndrome affects baby's of alcoholic parents, not the occasional drinking mom who didn't know. Good luck to you.

You're fine.

"The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recently conducted a large study including 400,000 American women, all of whom had consumed alcohol during pregnancy. Not a single case of fetal alcohol syndrome occurred and no adverse effects on children were found when consumption was under 8.5 drinks per week. 3

A recent review of research studies found that fetal alcohol syndrome only occurs among alcoholics. The evidence is clear that there is no apparent risk to a child when the pregnant woman consumes no more than one drink per day. 4"

Many women drink in the early stages of pregnancy mainly because they do not yet know they are pregnant. Now that you know you're expecting, now is the time to stop drinking. Alcohol is a highly toxic chemical particularly to developing fetuses. Your drinks most likely will not have any significant, if any, impact on your baby's development. Do not worry, but do be good from now until you deliver.

Best wishes for you and your baby!

NO NO NO ...fetal alcohol syndrome is from a mother who drinks a 26er of hard booze everyday or a case of beer everyday..you have to be an alcoholic to do that to your baby..my sister drank one 6oz glass of beer everyday after her six month .and that was on the doctors orders it had something to do with the yeast helping with the production of milk for when the baby would be out..and also one glass of wine every now and then is perfectly fine also..you stay away from the strong stuff..not good for the babies underdeveloped blood vessels..

Congratulations! And don't worry about the glasses of wine that you had. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome has only been observed in children whose mothers drank considerably, like 3 or more alcoholic drinks PER DAY. Wine, in low moderation, is not bad for you or your baby. In fact, my aunt's OB suggested that she drink one glass of red wine in the evenings to help with her hormonal craziness. She didn't find out that she was pregnant until she was about 15 weeks, and she had been out to the bar twice drinking tequila before then. And my little cousin is just fine.

I wish you and your little one the best of luck!

Drinking, drugs, etc. can be very harmful while pregnant. I would not be concerned about the small amount that you mentioned having, prior to your knowledge of the pregnancy. I would however, discontinue use of any alcohol during the pregnancy. Also remember that if you have a cat, it is not advised that you change the litter. This can be harmful as well.

Hope you have a very enjoyable pregnancy!

Those probably will not, but I would suggest that you refrain from drinking anymore, if you keep it up there is a possibility that your baby will have fetal alcohol syndrome. It is best to stay away from any form of caffeine also.
