My computer is an Athlon XP 2400 with 1GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce2 MX video card.

I'm not into gaming but I do watch a fair amount of video. Is there any real reason for me to upgrade my video card? If so, what kind of expectations should I have for an improvement in video display.

Besides watching video, I also do some basic video editing and I do things in PhotoShop - though nothing real intense.

My computer does seem to have trouble playing high def video. I'm starting to think it might just be time to get a new computer.

What's the real reason that is making you think about upgrading your graphics card?

If your present card runs fine then just stick with it. The reason I'm saying this is because the GeForce 2 MX is quite an old card.

With old cards, there's a host of other issue to consider when upgrading. You would need to know what type of graphic card slot your motherbord has but I'm betting that it will be AGP. The newer cards are mostly PCI-E slot cards so they will not fit your motherboard. So finding a suitable card may prove to be a little difficult.

geforce 2 mx should be fine for video. Only gaming, or 3d rendering software like auto cad would require you to upgrade. I don't think upgrading would improve video. I have a spare computer with an onboard 64 meg video card, and it plays video just as well as my other computer that has a 512 meg video card. If you want to improve the video playback try a different codec.

I also have the same processor but with 256mb of ram and onboard 32 mb graphics. I have no problem in watching movies till date. Though for video editing, you may require a better graphics card. Since most of the graphics cards today are compatible only with the PCI-E interface, I don't think you can upgrade your graphics. You cannot upgrade the motherboard too since no Socket A motherboard is available with PCI-E port.

Update your videocard ONLY when you are having problems are your games are having problems running. Buying them ahead is no advantage to you.
