you mean "the talented mr. ripley," right?
i believe tom ripley was a survivor, meaning he would use and discard people to save his hide. if it meant pretending to be gay to ingratiate himself, he'd do it. he's a consummate actor.

In Talented Mr. Ripley, Matt Damon plays a very conflicted man who is a master at becoming anyone but himself.
His primary motivation seems to be the envy of others. Damon's character is a sad and lonely man. He seems to have no real identity of his own, or feels his isn't worthy, so he must take on that of someone he studies and looks up to.
As for the homosexual tendencies, I believe that his character is a closeted homosexual. He seems at his happiest when around other men, but is not comfortable in the realization of it.
This was such a complex movie and character, that I actually wrote a college paper on it for psychology.

No I don't think so, he was stealing other people's Identity and lives, so if that meant portraying himself as gay until he took a new persona then so be it.

He's character is a little on that side. He is effeminate and bordering on to be or not to be? Just my analysis.

You guys are missing too many GAY scenes the movie tells you that Tom is Gay! On the boat, before Tom kills Dickie....Tom is yelling at Dickie that Dickie he knows the night they played chess(bath tub part)that there was something between them and that Dickie is pretending they are only brothers because its to scary to be what they are. GAY CLUE #1. The scene where Marge confronts Tom about why he has Dickie's rings and Peter Smith Kingsley comes to Toms house to see Tom(interrupting Tom's potential attack on her)....Peter had just whispered to Tom that he could come back after Marge leaves, Tom then agrees. #GAY CLUE #2. He and Peter then get it in right before Tom kills Peter at the end. GAY CLUE #3. He is Gaaaaaaayyyyyyy!
