A) Mr. carpenter is not a painter.
B) Mr. mason is not a carpenter.
C) Mr. carpenter is a carpenter.
D) Mr. mason is not a painter

If A were true and Mr. carpenter is not a painter then Mr. Mason would have to be both a painter and a carpenter.

A is false.

If B were true then both A and D would need to be false meaning both Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Mason are painters.

B is false.

If C were true then Mr. carpenter is, in fact, the carpenter but also have the co-profession of painter as A would have to be true in order for C to be true.

"...but it turned out that only one statement was true."

C is false.

So D must be true.

Mr. Mason is not a painter.

therefore, according to the falseness of A Mr. carpenter is a painter.

In order to keep B false Mr. Mason must be a carpenter which, of course, would support make C false in that Mr. Carpenter is not a carpenter.

Mr. Carpenter is the painter, Mr. Mason is the carpenter, and Mr. Painter is the mason.

It is the work of the person to whom you relate. It is his duty to make his name famous rather than profession through any method.
