Yes, if they want it to be... There are many ways to improve the economy, like plantation, industry, handcrafts or arts....etc.

It's up to the government.

That's a very good question. Only the other day I read that Malaysia has broken all previous tourism records and the revenue from tourism is now standing at RM36 billion, wow!

Of course Malaysia would survive without tourism, but I think the country in general would suffer at losing RM36 billion plus revenue every year.

It can but it will decrease. Malaysia's oil export is only a little since its oil reserves are small. Plantations don't bring much income either. If Malaysia becomes unfriendly to foreigners, foreign investments will cease and national economy will collapse. However, if it's only tourism that stops, Malaysian economy will survive, although GDP and living standard will drop.

Malaysian companies such as Proton make only loss abroad (see sell of Augusta for symbolic price of 1 Euro). Despite Malaysia having their own national oil company Petronas, withdrawal of Shell would hurt Malaysian economy. Malaysian technology is based on foreign-owned companies, mostly American and Japanese.

But yes, Malaysia can do without tourism.

Of course you can't, many countries in the world use tourism as an income to boost the economies in todays world. Why waste these resources away when they can generate income? For Malaysia, although they produce oil and other exports to maintain their GDP growth, it's the tourism industry that provide jobs to a lot of ppl in M'sia.
I love to visit places in Malaysia, don't you?
