Maybe you could have people taste some things while holding their noses, and record their responses. Then have the same people rinse their mouths, then taste the same things without holding their noses. Then record those responses.

no i don't believe it does. i've eaten things that smelled not the greatest but the taste was really good. i've also eaten things that smell great but taste like garbage. don't know if thats what you were looking for as far as an answer goes, but i tried

Yes, most of the cases it does.
And influence in the sense I would say SMELL does influence our EMOTIONS and thus our REACTIONS to food. that food itself may or may not taste that good or bad in real but smell definitely DOES control our reactions towards it.
