There still is one in Denver.

They have been saying for the last 5 years that every summer will be their last. I try to go at least once a year. They have better sound now than the old drive=in squawk boxes used to. The sound is broadcast on a low-wattage channel and you tune it in on your car speakers using the radio. Also they provide free electric heaters when the weather is chilly so you don't have to leave your motor running to get heat.

It must be really tempting to the owner to pack it in. The land it sits on must be worth much more than he'll ever make by running it as a drive-in. Also, most movie theaters make at least half their money from the concession stand. Drive ins don't make that much on concessions because everyone brings their own.

Hey our town is going for a look of yesteryear and we just got a new drive in movie. Each Screen has two movies. One for families and the others are R rated. We have only been once, but it was so much fun. AND. . . . you don't have speakers. You tune your radi to a certian station and there is is thru your car speakers so you don't get all that static. People still honk like crazy though when it gets dark and they are ready for the movie to start. LOL.

Bad screens, bad sound, and people having more fun 'not' watching the film then watching it. I still have one within an hour of my home and should take my kids there before that one closes. In 10 years you can ask this same question and 1/2 the people won't know what you are talking about. Good Question!

Last movie I saw in a drive-in was Purple Rain. I don't understand why almost all have disappeared, since it was a unique way to see a movie, you'd think there would be enough interest to support a few. And it could be done better now. We have the technology...

i "saw" some of my first movies at a drive in theatre. I say "saw" because technically I fell asleep in the bed in the back of the van while my parents watched the movie.....
I remember we saw one of the James Bond movies there and one of the Star Wars movies there.
They were kind of cool and I wish that there were a couple around somewhere just for fun. But I suppose that movies got really advanced in their sound effects and stuff that an outdoor theatre speaker wouldn't really do it justice.....

TV, VCRS, DVDs, in that order. It became easier to stay home and watch a movie on TV than to round up the kids or gang or whoever and take them out to the movies. I agree it's not as cool, but here you have it. The demise of yet another uniquely American institution.

We never had Drive In Movies in UK. I always wanted to go to one though. Maybe we didn't have them because of the unpredictable weather. Who wants to sit in a car, in the rain, with the windshield wipers going, trying to watch a movie?

I was around when the last one's were going away in our area...

A lot of the inner city theatres were showing blue movies because the suburban shopping mall multiplexes started taking the fun away...

perhaps the poor picture and poor sound, not to mention the space required to fit paying customers in. You can fit a lot more paying people in a room full of seats rather than (parking) lot full of cars
