Hi

I myself was not aware - but foreigners have a special counter at train station, and need not follow the normal track. This was a facility that the Government put in place for tourist especially.

You can have advanced booking - simply check http://www.indianrail.gov.in/
or
www.irctc.co.in
These are very useful sites. I had the name of one lady who worked as a high official in the railway department who was very helpful but I no longer recalled her name. Very kind of her.

Hope the sites help you in finding your way.

One more thing - the railway costs very very less than taxi. By more than ten times.

Take care.

Go to www.irctc.co.in cerate ID and password. Their service is excellent...do not think that as this is govt site so service will not be at par. Try e-ticket service..it is very convenient.
