Nylon and Steel have a huge difference in tone but it's probably just because you are so used to the Nylon that your ears are used to them and since you aren't advanced yet, you haven't really perfected the 'ear' for music.

There is one terrible mistake that happens so very often when people buy a guitar to start learning. They buy a nylon strung guitar. Nylon strung guitars are for playing Classical Guitar, or Flamenco (Spanish), NOT rock, pop or anything else.
Your ears are used to listening to the dull low resonance of the nylon strings. The steel strings have much more resonance and volume and will hold the notes or chords a lot longer.
You need to get yourself a tuning device of some sort, either a set of Pitch Pipes or and electronic tuner, to ensure perfect tone.
Keep playing, never give up.

nylon strings give a different sound to steel. also pending on the debth of the body... nylon strings are mainly used for classical music, where as steel such as rock, blues etc... you could buy the same size which you call a proper guitar, in nylon strings...

Steel strings sound way different than nylon. Are you tuned to the same notes??
