This questions sometimes comes during an IT job interview. In the field, it also becomes necessary to be able to get rid of spyware without running Spybot S&D or Adaware or even without consulting Task Manager. How would you go about doing that?

Humm maybe you can use hijackthis ;)
This would get the computer running unless its riddled by vundo, zlob and other nasty tojan/spware.
But if you do not know how to run hijackthis and delete 022 entries it could cut off internet access to the pc.

Maybe msconfig or checking the prefetch and temp directories??
I suppose you could arrange the files in the system32 directory by creation date and look for anything suspicious.. Also check the browser helper objects..

If you cant run spybot or ad aware, I would run Hijack this, it can show you everything starting and the bho's..

What kind of IT place asks a question like that.. I guess my answer would be.. Well, I would take my cd (or flash drive) out of my bag and install the software neccessary because it would be stupid to go onsite without it..

I guess you would have to be pretty familiar with exactly what programs are running on your PC at any given time. You could manually remove any file that you are certain doesnt belong. I guess you could do the same in the registry. I wouldnt want to go through all that, I'm sure it is an enormous pain in the you know what!!

Probably you can clean your system of spyware by clearing content of Temp & Temporary Internet File folders. Normally tracking cookies reside in these folders. But clean each time when you logoff from Internet.
