It should give you a message saying that it has a paper jam.

Well, that depends... what printer are you using? if it's a small printer, then it would be easy to see if there is a paper jam, cause you'd be able to see a paper stuck in between the rollers and the ink cartridge... some printers have hardware and software errors... like HP deskjet printers... they have a software that will indicate wether you have a paper jam or not, but sometimes it would display that you have a paper jam, but then there isn't any paper jam... try to open the printer cover again, if there isn't anything there, check the back of the printer, try to see if there is something at the back that could be use to open it, like a nob or something... it's a few little steps, but you will be able to know if there really is something stuck inside... could be an insect, or worst, a lizard... it happened to me...

I work for a printing company, Turn off your printer take all of the paper out of all trays, and take out the toner.. open cover and just gently move rollers etc with your fingers.. it may be something small like a staple stuck between rollers.. then reload your printer and see if it work.. you might even leave it off for half an hour and see if that helps... (Printers just do wierd stuff sometimes...) if that doesn't work I would call Brother direct and speak to a technician to see if they can further assist you over the phone or tell you where it can be repaired..

If it is a paper jam, paper will be stuck inside of it. Have you tried turning it off and then back on? That works sometimes.

If it is a laser printer you could try reseating the toner..
