Do you mean D & C? Often used to diagnose or treat abnormal uterine bleeding, the D&C is one of the most common surgical procedures performed on women. Dilation and Curettage also provides important information about whether uterine cancer is present.

Basically, the cervix is dilated and a curette is passed through the cervix to scrape the uterine walls.

D & C's are often performed after miscarriages, but that's not the only time. They're sometimes performed in an attempt to help with heavy or irregular menstrual periods and for other reasons.

Depending on circumstances and the doctor, it can be done in a physician's office, an outpatient surgical center, or a hospital. It can be done with local anesthetic, IV sedation, or general anesthesia. There are quite a few variables.

You can find a very good description of what the procedure is and why it's done at http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/surgery/a/d_and_c.htm.

A DNC is a common surgical procedure when women have miscarriages more than 12 weeks into pregnancy. DNC stand for Dilation and Curretage, whereas a curette, a spoon looking instrument that is sharp is inserted into the vagina to pull the miscarried baby out. It is very safe, yet a very emotional time

A "D and C" is otherwise known as a dilatation and curretage. The cervix is opened (dilated) and the lining of the uterus is scraped with a tiny spoon like instrument, (curretage). It is a very common procedure, usually done after miscarriage, and you are given a light anesthesia. It is usually done to remove any extra lining after an abortion or miscarriage, to prevent infection. You would normally be given some meds to prevent bleeding and cramps, and a mild pain-killer. It is done in an outpatient center.

D and C
Dilation and Curettage
It's when the gyn scrapes the uterus as after a miscarriage to remove the leftover debris. They do this procedure probably as a result of desmenorrhea. (heavy bleeding or large clots)
