Leaving a computer on is not going to crash a hard drive, If he dropped it, that would be a different story.
I use my laptop like it were a desktop, it sits on my desk and never gets turned off..

The only thing is, since these monitors are fixed to the laptop, I have mine set to turn off after 30 minutes.....This way I can preserve the life of the monitor.....
Right click desktop, properties, screen saver. Then click on power, and set the monitor to turn off after 20 or 30 minutes, and if you need the computer on for downloading, make sure to turn off hibernate....set the hibernate option to none.... most laptops are defaulted to 30 min.....

I leave my laptop on every night. Just make sure that it is well ventilated. I.e. I sleep with mine in my bed but am very careful not to have the ports blocked by my sheets or comforter. I instead prop it on a book which allows air to circulate around it. Other than overheating it should not crash.

hard drive crashed. And yes it is fine to leave it on all night i have a laptop that i havent turned off once in the past 2 months and it still works fine. His hard drive proably crashed because it had a defect you could proably contact the maker and they might send him a replacement if it is still under warrenty.

i will say that it is not fully safe to do so.bcoz it makes overheats your system and may even cause the chips to melt and burn.
what i advise is set your hibernation settings in such a way that if you forget to turn it off within stipulated time it automatically shuts down
