download a program called "Belarc advisor", google it, it will tell you everything you need to know

Download cpuid from http://www.cpuid.com Version 1.39 is the latest.
It will give you information about the motherboard, memory and BIOS.
You can get more detailed information from SiSoftware Sandra. The Lite version is a free 13MB download. Choose the download site from here: http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_3264&langx=en&a=
But as for the motherboard serial number... I've checked two of my PC and neither have a serial number that can be detected by either program. I also check an old motherboard and motherboard manuals couldn't find any reference to a motherboard serial number.
There are plenty of other ID numbers from BIOS, CPU etc.

First see if Direct X will tell you. Click start run and type dxdiag then press enter.
One of the screens should tell you, if not check the last tab on the right, the microsoft info button..
If that dont tell you, download CPU-z http://soft.softoogle.com/ap/p20.shtml
If that still dont tell you, then you will have to take the side of the pc off, and look at the board, The kind of board is useually in yellow between the PCI slots, If you have to crack open the case of your pc to tell, You might as well get a pen and paper and write down everything you can find as far as the letters and words. just in case....

Much of that information flash pretty quickly when booting up. Some of the more modern BIOSes also display within their setup screen.
